The MPU C2F School Program as a Strategy to Eliminate Malaria

C2F- Child to Family program launched in March 2024 is a program that empower a learner to advocate for a malaria free school and community. This is a demand driven approach that equips learners with information to enable them advocate and demand for malaria services; testing, treatment; and prevention.

Stakeholders in the program include; learners from whom Champions are selected to lead the advocacy, Patron who is a teachers, Community Health Worker and Community Leaders. The bigger engagement include the school, Rotary/Rotaract Club, the district-District Health Office/District Education Office and the Local Leadership

Schools in districts with high prevalence of malaria are mapped and those with high school enrolment identified and attached to a Rotary/Rotarct club that implements the program.

The Patron coordinates school activities and liaises with the Community Health Worker and the Rotary/Rotaract Club. They support in engagements that empower learners- debates about malaria, Drama, talking compounds and malaria corners in classes.

Trained Community Health Worker(s) is attached to the school to offer Test and Treat services, health education and information about malaria.

The School Malaria Champion is empowered with information about malaria to support fellow leaners to live a malaria free lifestyle. They support learners with signs and symptoms of malaria to get services. They ensure schools have adequate information about prevention and management of malaria; Talking compound, malaria corners and mosquito repellent plant nurseries

In this approach a learner is a contact and tracer factor into the community to eliminate malaria and this leads to ICCM- the landscape towards Eliminating Malaria. The family of a learner who is found malaria positive is tracked by the Community Health Worker and the entire family is tested. Whoever is found positive receives treatment. Households close to where this family is located are also with consent have their members testes and if found positive, they get treatment and given information about ways of preventing malaria.

The community leaders are not only a gate pass into the community but facilitate bi-laws to having smart homes- homes free from breeding grounds for mosquitoes and homes that plant mosquito repellent plants.
